The famous 'Scotch' brand name was born from an insult. In the mid-1920s, 3M engineer Richard Drew developed a two-inch-wide tan paper tape to help auto-body painters create clean lines on two-tone cars. During a field test, a frustrated painter, annoyed that the prototype only had adhesive on its edges, told Drew to 'take this tape back to those Scotch bosses of yours and tell them to put more adhesive on it!'
