A dozuki may look similar to a Western backsaw, but it works very differently. Instead of cutting on the push stroke, a dozuki cuts on the pull, allowing for a much thinner blade and excellent control. Its rigid spine keeps the cut straight, making it a favorite for joinery like tenons and dovetails. The name “dozuki” even translates to shoulder cut, a nod to its precision-focused design.
