When a child presses buttons over and over on their AAC device, it’s often labeled as “AAC stimming.” But what you’re really seeing is learning in progress. This is how AAC users: • explore their voice • learn where words are • understand cause & effect • build motor planning • gain confidence communicating Spoken-language learners babble with sounds. AAC users babble with buttons. We don’t silence babies for babbling — and we shouldn’t silence AAC users either. If you want to feel confident kno

Day 7 of AAC Awareness Month! When we have access to AAC outside — whether it’s a sign, a laminated core board, or a robust AAC device — everything changes. 💬☀️ Kids can communicate during their favorite part of the day: PLAY! They can say go, stop, swing, up, help, or your turn! right there on the playground. 🛝 It’s not about perfection — it’s about access and opportunity. When AAC is available everywhere, kids see that communication matters everywhere, too. 👉 Don’t overthink it. 👉 Keep it

Day 5 of AAC Awareness Month! Sometimes the most powerful thing we can do is keep it simple. Today, I’m modeling just ONE word — MONKEY! — throughout this adapted book. 🐵 Starting small makes AAC modeling feel doable for teachers and paraprofessionals. It builds confidence, consistency, and FUN! Each small moment of modeling adds up to more language opportunities for our students all day long. 💬🩷 #AACAwarenessMonth #aac #autismlittlelearners #speechtherapy #preschoolspecialeducation #corevoca

AAC (Augmentative & Alternative Communication) isn’t just a device, it’s a powerful tool we use in speech therapy to help children understand, learn and express language in the way that works best for them. 😊🌈 Here’s how AAC supports speech development: ✅ Teaches vocabulary and sentence structure ✅ Builds understanding of language (not just talking!) ✅ Supports turn-taking and social interaction ✅ Reduces frustration and behaviours from not being understood. From picture cards to high-tech dev

Alexandria Zachos | Echolalia and Child Led Therapy on Instagram: "Do you know what babbling looks like on an AAC device? It’s okay to let a child babble on their device! We know a lot about the importance of babbling when it comes to speaking with our mouths, but we don’t hear about the importance of allowing a child to babble on their AAC device. Oftentimes, this is looked at as meaningless or that the child isn’t interested in using the device in a “functional” way or “isn’t ready” for a robu

I’d love to hear from you 🫶🏽 What do you like about your child using an AAC device? What do you dislike? Has it worked for your family… or not so much? here is our experience We’ve seen so much progress . More sound mimicking, fewer behaviors, and the biggest win — real communication. She’s learned how to navigate her device and now she can truly tell us what she wants and needs.Feeding time has been a game changer too. She lets us know what she likes… and yes, she very clearly lets us know wh

Your child doesn’t need to understand instructions before using any form of AAC. In fact, if your child is struggling with understanding instructions and receptive language a form of AAC may be the thing that helps them to understand. There are no prerequisites for any type of AAC whether that is picture cards, high-tech AAC buttons etc. Each child will take to different forms of AAC depending on their learning style, cognitive ability and sensory input. alternative communication is not a one si

When we model AAC, we’re showing kids how communication works. Just like children learn spoken language by hearing people talk around them, AAC users learn their system by seeing others use it. When therapists like Miss Catherine model symbols during real interactions, it helps children start to understand: 💚 what symbols mean 💚 when they can use them 💚 how communication helps them connect with others Modeling takes the pressure off kids to “get it right.” Instead, it shows them that their AA
