Eastwood waited ten years to make Unforgiven. Then had to convince the one actor who didn't want to be in it. Eastwood sat on the script for a decade, waiting until he was old enough to play Bill Munny. But he needed Hackman for Little Bill. Hackman refused — tired of violent roles. Eastwood sent the script again. Hackman read it a second time and saw what Eastwood saw: this wasn't a violent film. It was a film about what violence does to people. Best Picture. Best Director.
