Base isolation systems are engineered to decouple a structure from damaging ground motion. Instead of allowing seismic forces to transfer directly into columns and beams, isolating elements are installed between the foundation and the superstructure. These systems typically use: • Elastomeric bearings • Lead rubber isolators • Friction pendulum devices When seismic waves reach a building, the isolators deform or slide. Energy is absorbed. Acceleration transmitted upward is significantly reduced.
