It depends. There are many different file sharing protocols, both local-only and routed. Many use DNS for name resolution, others can use mDNS (an announced protocol not dependent on a DNS server).
Whenever we work on multiple systems, we prefer sending files over the connection. After all being on the same LAN connection makes our work easier, file transfer is what makes our tasks difficult.
