FreeBSD是一种运行在x86平台下的类Unix系统。它以一个神话中的小精灵作为标志。 它是由BSD Unix系统发展而来，由加州伯克利学校(Berkeley)编写，第一个版本由1993年正式推出。BSD Unix和Unix System V是Unix操作系统的两大主流，以后的Unix系统都是这两种系统的衍生产品。
